Notification 2022-019

Nomination of experts for a technical meeting on indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Dear Madam/Sir, I am pleased to inform Parties and observers that the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the guidance of the Bureau of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) and with technical support from the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre, is organizing a technical meeting on indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework as requested in SBSTTA recommendation 24/2. As specified in the SBSTTA recommendation (paragraph 3), this expert meeting will contribute to a scientific and technical review of the proposed indicators of the monitoring framework for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, building on the work done at SBSTTA 24, focussing on a comprehensive analysis of high-level indicators and the feasibility for Parties to use them. The meeting will also take into account the outcomes of the fourth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, to be held on 21-26 June 2022, including with regard to the formulation of draft goals and targets. The technical meeting will be held from 29 June to 1 July 2022 in Bonn, Germany, back-to-back with the ninth Plenary Session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and will be conducted in English. Further information, including relevant meeting documents, will be made available on the meeting webpage once logistical and technical arrangements are finalized. I hereby invite Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations to submit the name of one or more expert/s who may be considered to participate in the meeting. The SBSTTA Bureau will select experts based on expertise and experience, taking into account regional and gender balance, and a balance across disciplines to reflect the scope of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Thus, Parties may nominate more than one expert in order to facilitate the selection of people representing a broad range of thematic expertise in all aspects of the draft post-2020 global biodiversity framework, including areas related to the various aspects of biodiversity, the direct and indirect drivers of biodiversity loss, and means of implementation, among others. When submitting nominations, please provide the name and full contact details of the nominee(s), as well as a curriculum vitae that demonstrates their area of expertise, bearing in mind the purpose of the meeting described above. Nominations should be submitted through an official letter addressed to the CBD Executive Secretary and sent as a scanned attachment to secretariat@cbd.int no later than 3 May 2022. Participation in the meeting will be limited to a manageable number depending on the availability of financial resources and logistics, to allow effective meeting discussions. At least five experts from each region (25 experts from those nominated by Parties), and up to 15 additional experts nominated by organizations, will be selected. Financial support will be provided to enable the participation of selected participants nominated by eligible Parties to the Convention. Once selected, it is expected that participants’ work would start by virtual means, coordinated through the Secretariat, prior to the face-to-face meeting to be held in Bonn. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
